Walk into almost any terraced house in Liverpool and the space under the stairs is doing one of two things: nothing at all behind a painted spandrel panel, or serving as a dark cupboard where the hoover guards a pile of things nobody can reach. That triangle holds around two cubic metres. In a house where the hallway is 900mm wide and coats live on the newel post, that's too much space to write off.

Most of our under-stairs work is in Victorian terraces around Wavertree, Anfield and Aigburth and 1930s semis further out - houses where storage was never part of the plan and the staircase hasn't moved in a hundred years. That suits us fine. We scribe to what's there.

The void under a straight terraced-house flight holds around 2m³ - roughly the volume of forty carry-on suitcases. Most of it sits behind one awkward door doing nothing. We measure the full slope and build storage into all of it, right down to the 300mm at the low end.

Deep drawer banks on heavy-duty runners bring the back of the void out to you. No kneeling in a dark cupboard dragging out the hoover to reach the Christmas box behind it.
Built around your meters
Consumer units, gas and electric meters and stopcocks usually live under the stairs. We design removable panels and hinged sections around them, so the meter reader gets in without you emptying a drawer.
Runners rated for real weight
Shoe drawers and tool drawers get heavy. We use side-mounted, soft-close runners rated to 40kg or more per drawer, fixed into an 18mm carcass - not the 12kg bottom-mount runners flat-pack furniture relies on.

What to look for in an under stairs storage installer
Make sure they measure the slope, not just the opening. An under-stairs unit is three different heights in one run, and on an old staircase the stringer is rarely straight. If an installer quotes from a photo of the cupboard door, the carcasses arrive square, the staircase isn't, and the gaps get hidden with silicone. Every unit should be scribed to the stringer and the floor on site.
Ask what the drawers run on. A drawer full of shoes or tools can weigh 30kg. Bottom-mounted budget runners are rated for a fraction of that and sag within a year. You want full-extension, side-mounted runners with a stated load rating, screwed into 18mm carcass sides - and it's worth asking to see the spec in writing on the quote.
Check the meter access plan before signing anything. Most Liverpool terraces keep the consumer unit and at least one meter under the stairs. A good installer shows you on the drawing exactly which panel hinges or lifts off, and leaves working clearance around the board. If the answer is "we'll sort access later", later usually means cutting a hole in your new joinery.
Finishes and styles
Most customers want the unit to disappear into the hallway - flat, handleless fronts with push-to-open catches, painted the same colour as the panelling or skirting so the staircase looks original. Shaker-style fronts with small knobs suit period hallways, and a contrast colour on the drawer bank turns it into a feature if you'd rather it stood out. Tongue-and-groove effect fronts work well under painted Victorian flights.

Will pull-out drawers work on an original Victorian staircase?+
Yes, and most of our under-stairs work in Liverpool is exactly that - terraces in Wavertree, Anfield and the Dingle with their original flights. Victorian stringers are rarely straight or plumb after a century of settlement, so nothing is built square out of a catalogue. We scribe each carcass to the stringer and floor on site, and the drawers run on their own level frame inside, so a leaning staircase doesn't mean leaning drawers.
Can you put lighting and sockets in the void?+
Yes. LED strips that come on when a drawer opens, a light and double socket for a desk nook, or a socket for charging the cordless hoover are all common requests. New sockets and hard-wired lighting are done by our qualified electrician and you get the certificate at handover.
My meters and consumer unit are under the stairs - is that a problem?+
No, it's the normal situation in Liverpool terraces and we design around it as standard. Meters and consumer units get a hinged or lift-off panel so they stay fully accessible for readings and electrical work, and we leave the clearances an electrician would need to replace the board later. What we never do is box them in permanently.
Could I fit a desk under the stairs instead of storage?+
Yes - an under-stairs desk nook is one of the most popular versions, especially in two-bed terraces with no spare room to give up.
