Bespoke joinery, built for Liverpool homes
Custom joinery is the umbrella for everything we build made to measure: media walls, fitted wardrobes, alcove units, under stairs storage, home offices, window seats, wall panelling, radiator covers, banquette seating, pantry and boot-room fit-outs. If it's timber and it has to fit a specific space, it's our kind of job.
That matters in this city because so few Liverpool rooms are square. Victorian terraces in Wavertree and Anfield have chimney breasts with alcoves that differ by an inch side to side. 1930s semis in Childwall have bay fronts and picture rails to work around. Loft conversions in Allerton and Mossley Hill throw sloped ceilings at every wardrobe. Flat-pack ignores all of it. We measure it, draw it and build to it.
Most pieces are made in the workshop and fitted in a day or two, spray-finished or hand-painted in any colour, with electrics and decorating handled by the same team where the job needs them.
Why go bespoke rather than buy or bodge?
Made for awkward rooms
Liverpool housing is full of rooms flat-pack was never designed for: chimney breasts with uneven alcoves, bay fronts, sloped loft ceilings, walls that are two centimetres out of square. Bespoke joinery is scribed to what's actually there, so it fits wall to wall with no filler panels.
Drawn before it's built
Every job starts with a measured survey and a scaled drawing. You see the proportions, the door layout and the finish on paper, and you get a fixed written price against that drawing before we order a sheet of material.
Better materials than the shops
We build with 18mm moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood and solid timber where it earns its keep - not foil-wrapped chipboard. Doors are hung on adjustable soft-close hinges you can buy spares for in ten years.
Furniture-grade finish
Doors and panels are sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted on site, in any colour you can name. Either way you get a hard-wearing surface that can be touched up or repainted when the room changes.
One team, all trades
Where a job needs electrics for lighting or a fused spur, or decorating to blend new work into the room, the same crew handles it. You deal with one company, one schedule and one invoice.
It stays with the house
Fitted joinery is part of the property, not the removal van. Estate agents list alcove units, fitted wardrobes and media walls as features, which freestanding furniture never gets credit for.

How a joinery project runs
Free site visit
We measure the space, check the walls, floors and any services in the way, and talk through what the piece needs to hold, hide or do. Bring photos you've saved - they help.
Design & drawing
You get a scaled drawing with dimensions, door layout, internal fit-out and finish. We revise it until it's right - nothing is ordered until you've signed it off.
Written quote
One fixed figure covering materials, workshop time, fitting and finishing. No day-rate creep and no provisional sums.
Workshop build
Carcasses, doors and face frames are cut and assembled in the workshop, where the tooling gives cleaner edges and tighter tolerances than site work ever can.
Fitting
Units are fixed level and plumb, scribed to your walls and skirtings, and any electrics for lighting or sockets are first-fixed as we go.
Finishing
Spray-finished pieces arrive painted and get filled and touched in; hand-painted work is caulked, primed and given two topcoats in the room.
Handover
We adjust every door and drawer, walk the piece with you, and leave the room clean with paperwork for any electrical work.

What to look for in a joiner
Ask for a drawing and a fixed price. Bespoke work priced from a text message is a guess, and guesses get corrected on your invoice. A joiner who surveys the room, produces a scaled drawing and quotes one written figure against it has nowhere to hide extras later. If the answer is a day rate with no end date, be careful.
Ask what it's actually made from. "MDF" covers everything from crumbly bargain board to moisture-resistant MDF that machines like hardwood. Ask for the spec by name: board type and thickness, hinge brand, drawer runner type. A good joiner answers in detail without being prickly about it. Vague answers usually mean the cheapest sheet on the rack.
Look at the edges in their photos. Anyone can make a cabinet look decent from across the room. Zoom in on past work where the unit meets the wall and the skirting - that scribed junction is where skill shows. Tight, consistent lines mean careful work. A thick bead of caulk doing the joining means the saw was out by more than the caulk gun should ever fix.
Materials and finishes
Most fitted pieces are built from 18mm moisture-resistant MDF with birch ply for drawer boxes and heavy shelves, then sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the room. Popular choices at the moment are deep greens, navy and warm neutrals, usually in an eggshell sheen. Shaker doors, slatted panels, reeded glass and brass or black hardware all get specified on the drawing, so there are no surprises on fitting day.
Solid oak comes in for worktops, window-seat tops and open shelving where you want visible grain. We bring board and colour samples to the site visit so you can judge them in your own light.
What does custom joinery cost?
As a guide across the family: media walls run £1,800 - £5,500, a pair of alcove units £2,000 - £3,800, and a full wardrobe wall £2,500 - £6,000 depending on size, internals and finish. Small one-off jobs - shelves, radiator covers, boxing-in - are priced from around £280 per day plus materials.

What's the difference between joinery and carpentry?+
Carpentry is the structural timber work in a building - stud walls, joists, roofs, door linings. Joinery is the finer, fitted work: wardrobes, alcove units, cabinets, panelling, anything built to furniture tolerances. In practice a good joiner does both, but if you're hiring for fitted furniture you want someone whose day job is joinery, because the tolerances are millimetres rather than the 5-10mm carpentry can get away with.
MDF, moisture-resistant MDF, plywood or solid timber - which should I choose?+
For painted fitted furniture, moisture-resistant MDF is the right answer most of the time: it's flat, stable, machines cleanly and takes spray paint well. Standard MDF is fine for shelving interiors in dry rooms. Birch plywood earns its cost where strength matters - long shelves, drawer boxes, anything holding books or vinyl. Solid timber is for worktops, window seats and face frames, not wide panels, because it moves with the seasons and painted joints will crack. We'll specify each part honestly on the drawing.
Spray finish or hand-painted - which is better?+
A workshop spray finish gives the flattest, most durable surface - close to factory kitchen doors - and it's what we recommend for doors and drawer fronts. Hand-painting comes into its own on site: scribes, fixed panels and anything fitted against a wonky wall gets caulked and brush-finished so the piece reads as part of the room. Most of our jobs use both. Spraying adds a little cost but resists chips and wipes clean better.
How long will my joinery job take?+
Typically 2 to 4 weeks from survey to fitted, depending on the workshop queue. The site visit and drawing take the first few days, materials and spraying account for most of the middle, and fitting is usually 1 to 3 days in your home. Bigger projects like a full wardrobe wall or a media wall with electrics run longer, and we confirm dates in writing before we start.
Do you take on small one-off jobs?+
Yes. Not everything needs a full design process - a pair of floating alcove shelves, a radiator cover, a window seat or boxing in a meter can be priced quickly and often done in a day. Small works are charged from around £280 per day plus materials. If you have a list of little jobs, batch them into one visit and the day rate works hard for you.
Is it built in a workshop or in my house?+
Both, deliberately. Carcasses, doors and anything sprayed are made in the workshop, where cutting and finishing are more accurate and your house stays out of the dust. Fitting, scribing and hand-painting happen on site. The exception is work that can't physically come through the door - full-height panelling or under-stairs fit-outs get built in place. Either way the mess is sheeted, hoovered and gone when we leave each day.
