A media wall pulls the TV, fire, lighting and storage into one fitted piece instead of a cluster of furniture and trailing cables. We design and build them from scratch - a timber frame fixed to your wall, boarded and finished to match the room, with the TV recessed flush and every cable run inside.
Most of our media wall work in Liverpool is in terraces and semis where the chimney breast dictates the layout. That suits a media wall well: the breast takes the TV and fire, and the alcoves either side become shelving or closed cupboards. In newer homes around the docks and south Liverpool we more often build full flat walls with panelling and LED detail.

What to look for in a media wall installer
Insist on a site visit before any price. A media wall priced from a photo is a guess. The installer needs to find your studs or masonry, check where the flue and any old vents run, and look at where power currently enters the wall. If someone quotes a fixed figure over the phone, the difference gets found later - usually in extras.
Ask who does the electrical work. A media wall nearly always needs new sockets and a fused spur for the fire. That work is notifiable, and you should be handed a certificate at the end. If the answer is vague, the sockets are probably being spurred off an extension lead behind the boarding - which is exactly where you don't want a hidden fire risk.
Check what the TV recess is made of. The recess should be lined with plywood fixed back to the frame, not bare plasterboard. Plasterboard fixings work loose under the weight of a big screen, and with the bracket buried inside a fitted wall, refixing it later means opening the whole face up.
Finishes and styles
Most Liverpool customers go for painted panelling - shaker-style or slatted - in deep greens, navy or off-black, with LED strips behind the shelves. Stone-effect and marble-effect boards suit larger walls and open-plan rooms, and a plain skimmed finish painted with the room keeps things quiet if the TV shouldn't dominate.

Do I need an electrician for a media wall?+
Yes - new sockets, fused spurs for the fire and any hard-wired lighting are notifiable electrical work. Our electrician does the first fix and final connections and you receive the certificate at handover, which you'll want if you ever sell the house.
Can you build a media wall around a chimney breast?+
Yes, and in Liverpool that's one of the most common jobs we do. Victorian terraces and 1930s semis usually have a chimney breast with an alcove either side, which is a natural layout for a media wall - TV and fire on the breast, shelving or cupboards in the alcoves. If the flue is redundant we can also look at recessing deeper into the breast itself.
Will a media wall hold a large TV safely?+
Yes. We line the TV recess with plywood fixed back to the studwork or masonry, so the bracket screws into solid timber rather than plasterboard. That's rated well beyond the weight of any domestic screen, including 75" and 85" panels.
Do I need planning permission or building regs approval?+
No planning permission is needed - a media wall is internal joinery. The only regulated part is the electrical work, which our electrician self-certifies and documents. If you're in a listed building anywhere in the city we'd flag anything that needs consent at the site visit.
