Storage for the room no standard wardrobe fits

A loft conversion gives you a bedroom where at least one wall slopes, and that slope defeats every wardrobe in every catalogue. A standard 2m unit only stands where the ceiling is full height - which in a typical converted loft is a strip down the middle of the room. Under a 45 degree pitch, half the floor area sits below head height, and most people surrender it to a low chest of drawers and a row of plastic boxes.

We build wardrobes to the slope instead. Angled carcasses and doors follow the pitch right down to the knee wall, the eaves void behind the knee wall gets boarded, lined and fitted with push-in drawers, and the full-height gable walls take conventional hanging. The whole room works.

Liverpool has thousands of these rooms - the loft-converted semis around Allerton and Mossley Hill, the Crosby and Formby dormers, the terraces with rooms in the roof. Nobody local specialises in fitting them out. We do.

Why fit angled wardrobes rather than make do?

Built to the pitch of your roof

Carcasses, doors and end panels are cut to follow the slope, so the wardrobe fills the triangle a standard unit leaves empty. Under a 45 degree pitch that's roughly half the floor area of the room recovered.

The eaves void becomes storage

Behind the knee wall of most loft conversions sits a long triangular void doing nothing. We fit doors, push-in drawer units and slide-out rails into it - suitcases, Christmas boxes and out-of-season clothes disappear.

Designed around purlins and steels

Loft rooms come with obstacles: purlins, steel beams, posts and pipe runs. We box them into the design and build the storage around them rather than losing a whole wall to one beam.

Every door actually opens

Under a slope, a standard hinged door hits the ceiling before it's halfway open. We set door heights and hinge positions to the pitch, and use drawers low down where doors would fight the floor.

No building regs needed

Fitted wardrobes count as furniture, not building work, so there's no application and no sign-off to wait for - even in a loft conversion. The room stays exactly as certified.

Made and fitted by local joiners

We survey, make and fit ourselves. Angled work punishes guesswork, so every slope is measured with a level and a bevel gauge, not estimated from a photo.

What can go into your loft room

  • Full-height angled wardrobes on the gable walls with hanging and shelves
  • Sloped-front wardrobes under the pitch, cut to your roof angle
  • Under-eaves cupboard runs with doors matched to the knee wall
  • Push-in drawer units and slide-out rails inside the eaves void
  • Insulated and lined eaves interiors so clothes stay dry
  • Desks and window seats worked into the same run for WFH loft rooms

Plenty of Liverpool loft rooms now double as offices, so desks, shelving and window seats get built into the same angled run. One design, one fit, the whole room used.

How we fit loft wardrobes in Liverpool

1

Free site visit

We measure the pitch, the knee walls and the head height, open up the eaves access if there is one, and note purlins, steels, tanks and wiring.

2

Design & drawing

You get a scaled drawing of each elevation showing the angled fronts, eaves doors and interiors, with a fixed written price.

3

Written quote

One figure for materials, making and fitting. Angled work is priced from measurements, not padded with contingency.

4

Making

Carcasses are cut square, fronts and panels are cut to your measured angles, and painted finishes are sprayed before fitting day.

5

Eaves preparation

Where we're fitting into the eaves void we check the insulation line, board the floor of the void and line the interior so it's clean and dry.

6

Fitting

Everything is scribed to the slope and fixed back to the timbers. Most loft wardrobe jobs take one to three days on site.

7

Handover

Doors and drawers are aligned, eaves access panels are checked, and we leave the room clean and ready to use.

What to look for in a loft wardrobe maker

Make sure they measure the angles on site. Roof pitches vary between houses, between sides of the same roof, and along a single slope where old timbers have settled. Angled fronts cut from an assumed 45 degrees arrive with wedge-shaped gaps. Look for someone who turns up with a bevel gauge and a laser level, not a tape and optimism.

Ask what happens behind the knee wall. If the answer to the eaves void is "we just put doors on it", clothes and boxes go into a cold, dusty roof space. The void should be boarded, lined and kept ventilated, with access retained to tanks and wiring. That's the difference between eaves storage and a decorated hole.

Check nothing structural gets touched. Purlins, rafters and steels in a converted loft are doing a job, and your conversion's completion certificate depends on them. A joiner should build around them and say so in the drawing. Anyone offering to "trim back" a purlin to fit a carcass is volunteering you for a structural engineer's bill.

Finishes and styles

Loft rooms are usually the smallest bedrooms in the house, so most customers paint the angled fronts the same colour as the walls - the wardrobes read as part of the room and the ceiling line stays calm. Spray-lacquered whites and pale greys are the standard choice, shaker fronts suit the older terraces, and push-catch doors keep sloped fronts clean of handles you'd catch your head on.

We bring samples to the site visit so you can check colours under the skylights, where daylight behaves differently than in the rooms below.

What do loft and eaves wardrobes cost?

As a guide: a run of under-eaves cupboards along a knee wall costs £800 - £2,000 depending on length and internals. A full angled wardrobe wall, cut to the pitch with hanging and drawers, typically lands between £1,800 and £4,500.

The pitch, the length of the run and the finish set the price - which is why every job starts with a free measured site visit and a fixed written quote.

Loft Wardrobe FAQs

How much do loft wardrobes cost in Liverpool?+

A run of under-eaves cupboards along one knee wall typically costs £800 - £2,000 depending on length and whether we add drawers or slide-out rails inside. A full angled wardrobe wall - floor to ceiling on the gable, sloped fronts under the pitch - runs £1,800 - £4,500 with the finish making most of the difference. Every job is priced from a free site visit with a fixed written quote.

Can you build around purlins and steel beams?+

Yes - it's normal loft work. Purlins and steels get boxed in neatly and the carcasses are built around them, usually with the shelf and rail layout arranged so the beam sits behind a fixed panel rather than in your hanging space. We never notch or cut into structural timbers or steels; the wardrobe fits the structure, not the other way round.

What about insulation and condensation behind eaves doors?+

This is the thing to get right. The eaves void sits outside the room's insulated envelope, so it runs colder, and warm bedroom air meeting that cold space can condense. We keep the roof's ventilation path clear, line and board the storage area, and fit sealed doors so the void isn't pulling warm moist air through constantly. For clothes storage inside the heated room we build against the insulated slope instead - the eaves void is best for suitcases and boxes, not your good coats.

Do loft wardrobes need building regs approval?+

No. Fitted wardrobes are furniture, not building work, so there's no application, no inspection and no certificate needed - even in a loft conversion. What we won't do is alter anything the conversion's sign-off depends on: structural timbers, fire doors, escape windows and the insulation line all stay untouched.

Is the eaves void behind the knee wall worth using?+

Almost always, and in most Liverpool conversions it's completely wasted. Behind a 1.2m knee wall under a 45 degree pitch there's a triangular void running the length of the room. With a boarded floor, lining and push-in drawer units it swallows suitcases, decorations and spare bedding. We also keep access panels to anything that lives in there - water tanks, wiring runs, the eaves ventilation - so nothing gets sealed in.

How long does fitting take?+

An under-eaves cupboard run is usually one day on site. A full angled wardrobe wall takes two to three days because of the scribing involved. Making comes first, so from survey to fitting is typically three to five weeks. The dusty work happens in our workshop, not your bedroom.
