If there's one piece of joinery made for this city's housing stock, it's the alcove unit. The Victorian terraces of Wavertree, Aigburth and Anfield and the 1930s semis of Childwall and West Derby nearly all share the same living room shape: a chimney breast in the middle and a recess either side, each one a slightly different width and none of them square. Freestanding furniture never quite fits. Fitted units do, because they're cut to the actual wall.
The classic layout is a base cabinet to around 900mm with floating shelves or open shelving above - closed storage for the clutter, display for the books. Full-height bookcases suit readers and home workers, glazed tops suit glassware, and a window seat in the bay ties the whole wall together. Every unit is drawn to your room, built from 18mm board and scribed in on site.

Why have alcove units built rather than buy shelving?
Scribed to walls that aren't straight
No Liverpool alcove is the same width at the top as at the bottom - a century of settlement and old lime plaster sees to that. Every shelf and cabinet is scribed to the wall on site, so the fit is tight even where the plaster wanders 20mm.
Built around the chimney breast
The breast-and-alcove layout in Victorian terraces and 1930s semis is what these units were made for. Cabinets and shelves fill the recesses, the breast stays proud, and the room finally has a reason for its shape.
Shelves that hold real books
We build shelves from 18mm board with thickened front edges, fixed into battens or concealed brackets rated for the span. A metre of paperbacks weighs about 25kg - our shelves are built for that, not for three ornaments.
Storage down low, display up top
The standard layout - base cabinets to about 900mm with shelves above - hides the router, the toys and the paperwork behind doors and keeps the books and pictures on show. Sockets and cable holes go in before the back panels.
Painted in or made a feature
Units can be painted the same colour as the walls so they read as original features, or picked out in a contrast - deep green and navy are the current favourites in the terraces around Penny Lane.
One team, start to finish
Joinery, any electrics for lamps and LED strips, and the final painting are handled by the same crew. You deal with one company and the room is left decorated.

None of it is a set menu. A drinks cupboard with a pull-out shelf, a record storage run sized to 12" sleeves, or a hidden desk that folds away behind doors - if it fits the alcove, we draw it in.
Bay window seats with storage
Most rooms with alcoves also have a bay, and the two builds belong together. A window seat runs bench-height joinery around the bay - usually 450 to 500mm high, matching the alcove cabinets - with lift-up lids or deep drawers underneath for blankets, toys and board games. Add a made-to-measure cushion and the coldest corner of a Victorian front room becomes the seat everyone argues over.
Angled and curved bays are no problem: the seat is built in faceted sections scribed to each face of the bay, and we keep radiators in mind - if one sits in the bay we either grille the seat front or move the radiator as part of the job.
As an add-on to alcove units, a window seat typically costs £600 to £1,400, and having both built in one visit is cheaper than two separate jobs.

What to look for in an alcove unit maker
Ask how they deal with skirting and coving. The lazy approach is to rip the skirting off and butt the unit to bare plaster, which leaves scars on a period room. The proper approach is to scribe the unit around the skirting and stop full-height units neatly under the coving, or run a matching cornice. If the answer doesn't mention scribing at all, keep looking.
Check the shelf spec against what you'll put on it. 15mm melamine on plastic pegs sags under a metre of books within months. You want 18mm minimum with a thickened or lipped front edge, fixed to battens or brackets screwed into the masonry, and a stated span limit. A maker confident in their shelves will happily talk fixings and load figures.
Insist on a measured drawing before you commit. Both alcoves need measuring at several heights, because in a period house they're different widths and neither is square. A drawing with real dimensions, shelf positions and a fixed price protects you from the "we'll work it out on the day" school of joinery, where problems get solved with filler.
Finishes and styles
Most Liverpool customers go for painted shaker doors with flat shelves above, either colour-matched to the walls or in deep green, navy or off-black as a contrast. Reeded glass doors are popular on drinks cupboards, oak-veneer shelves warm up an otherwise painted run, and LED strips under each shelf earn their keep on winter evenings. In 1930s semis a simpler flat-door style usually sits better than shaker.

My walls are wonky - can you still get a tight fit?+
Yes, that's the whole point of scribing. In Victorian terraces the alcove is often 20 to 30mm wider at the skirting than at picture-rail height, and the plaster bellies in and out between. We cut each cabinet side and shelf to follow the actual wall line, and scribe around skirting and coving rather than ripping them off. The caulk line at the end should be a couple of millimetres, not a finger-width gap.
Should the units be painted in or a contrast colour?+
Painted the same colour as the walls, alcove units read as original features and make the room feel bigger - that's the safer choice if you might sell. A contrast colour, usually deep green, navy or off-black with the walls kept light, turns the chimney breast wall into the feature of the room. We bring painted samples so you can judge both against your own light before deciding.
Will the shelves hold a full load of books?+
Yes. We use 18mm board with a thickened front edge for stiffness, and fix shelves into timber battens or concealed steel brackets screwed to the masonry, not plasterboard plugs. On spans over about 900mm we add a mid-fixing or deepen the edge so the shelf won't sag. A fully loaded metre of books is roughly 25kg, and that's the load the fixings are chosen for.
Do alcove units add value when you sell?+
Estate agents in Liverpool consistently list fitted alcove storage as a selling feature in period houses, because buyers see finished, useful space rather than a job on their to-do list. You won't get a pound-for-pound uplift on any joinery, but fitted units photograph well, help a listing stand out, and unlike furniture they stay with the house at sale.
How long does fitting take?+
A pair of base-and-shelf alcove units typically takes 2 to 3 days on site: fitting and scribing first, then filling, caulking and painting.
